![]() Along the volada is an elaborate system of windows. Running along the front and sides of the house and flanking the major rooms is the volada, a gallery which protects the rooms from the heat of the sun. At the rear of the house are the kitchen and next to it, the open-air azotea. Bedrooms flank the sala and nearby are the dining room. Opening to the caida is the sala or living room. ![]() The stairs, on the other hand, lead up to the caida or upper entrance hall. Anyway, as my first visit in to vegan, I can’t really mention the features of a once bahay na bato because I don’t have any idea about it but now, as my research goes on in the library and internet, I can now prove to you the different features. I just wonder why the stone houses compose only of two storeys. As I first saw a stone house when I was 12 years old, I immediately notice the large balconies that occupy the street and it also made to help the circulation of the air in the house, therefore the house looks more elegant. The roofs are out of curves, instead of nipa. The stone wall at the ground floor stands through enough to carry out the roof, while at the upper floor compose of hardwoods that make the structure more stable and flexible. After the bad reputation to the nipa huts, eventually bahay na bato exist.īahay na bato may be describe as a house with wooden legs and a stone skirt, a style construction which make the house ensure to survive in calamities like earthquake. Getting the conceptual design of the bahay kubo is such very nice idea, that is why the idea is being used for the concept of bahay na bato and the huts are no longer spread because of its brittle materials, thus the huts were prone to fire. We largely show the evolution of the design concept of the nipa hut, as it evolves in to a best architecture today, with its primitive shelter to an ingenious yet accessible design. ![]() Is the bahay kubo are still existing? Yes it is, but It only exist along the countryside especially in rural.īahay kubo is “Primitive yet ingenious”. What something I love in the huts is the natural ventilation of it, I love the way how nature penetrates the interior and keeping the hut cool and pleasant. This feature is use to Raise the interior from the ground safeguards the shelter’s inhabitants from flood, and from snakes and other wild animals. A nipa hut could not be complete without this feature the shelter is elevated on stilt or posts of one to two meters defending on the area where the said shelter is constructed. Likewise, some huts have an open back porch or batalan where household chores are done and where the jars of water are placed. Another feature of the the bahay kubo is ladder or hagdan which can easily be removed at night or when the owners are out. The windows have tukod or “legs” that hold the swinging shades open during the day, and secure it back in place at night. The walls are made of nipa and cogon leaves or sawali or woven bamboo, and there are large windows on all sides, which keep the interior well-ventilated. ![]() This area serves as the area for livestock pens, storage space, workspace and granary. It has a cellar, called silong where most household chores are done. The usual “bahay kubo” was ensure the vegetation must adapt the surroundings for its user not be exposed from the sun, noise and air pollution.Īs my study about bahay kubo goes on, the characteristics and feature of a bahay kubo mention here, just like, A typical bahay kubo only has one, large, open, multi-purpose room for dwelling, called bulwagan. It was also designed for its functionality, natural ventilation and easily access by the natives, and to be easily rebuild once damage by typhoon, flood and earthquake and some other natural calamities. The design was formulated by our ancestors they constructed perfectly the nipa hut to adapt the tropical climate of the Philippines, the construction is time efficient and effective, normally cubic in shape. It was made up of native materials like bamboo and nipa, otherwise readily available for free and abundant. “Bahay kubo” or also known as “nipa hut” is the Philippines most prescribed conceptual design in the modern.
